A
Brief History of the Council
Celebrating 50 Years of Prevention services to Bexar County…
The San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse was organized
by a small group of prominent citizens in 1957 to educate the
community about the disease of alcoholism and to help alcoholics
and their families find help. Fifty years later the Council
is still working to educate communities about one of its major
health problems—alcoholism, an addictive disease—
and is still working to strengthen families.
The
Council’s purpose is “to create a positive future
for our children by providing prevention resources to promote
communities free of addiction and other destructive behaviors.”
Today
the San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse is an innovative
leader in preventing and solving problems associated with substance
abuse in the community and the state. To serve its purpose, the
Council provides an array of services designed for the diverse
community of San Antonio, which includes state-of-the-art preventions
