PREVENTION RESOURCE CENTER

The Prevention Resource Center, Region 8 (PRC8) is one of eleven Resource Centers in the state of Texas. The center serves the Department of State Health Services for Region 8, which is comprised of twenty-eight counties. These counties include: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Calhoun, Comal, DeWitt, Dimmitt, Edwards, Frio, Gillespie, Goliad, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Jackson, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Kinney, La Salle, Lavaca, Maverick, Medina, Real, Uvalde, Val Verde, Victoria, Wilson, and Zavala. The PRC 8 office is centrally located in Bexar County, with satellite clearinghouses located in the Councils in Del Rio and Victoria to facilitate ease of access in a large region.


The goal of the PRC8 is to increase the effectiveness and visibility of prevention education materials and resources, and to coordinate minors and tobacco strategies within the state.


The Council’s Prevention Resource Center – “PRC8” provides services to prevention professionals from all organizations, and entities engaged in social, physical and mental health prevention activities; community leaders and volunteers working in prevention, teachers, counselors, educational administrators, children and youth in school, and those who are not in school; parents and families; communities at-large; local news media within the region including television, radio, newspapers; and persons in need of training in the area of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention.


The PRC8 is charged with carrying out needs assessments to help assess the needs of prevention services and resources in Region 8. In addition, the PRC conducts tobacco prevention presentations for minors, parents, and other community members. The PRC 8 provides the media with public service announcements and information to raise awareness about the adverse health consequences of tobacco use and the gateway relationship of tobacco to other drugs. The PRC 8 also has direct involvement in activities with community; private health professionals, medical groups, law enforcement, PTAs local service providers and tobacco coalitions, and other advocates for reducing minors’ access to tobacco. These activities include health fairs, public education campaigns, conferences, trainings, and others provided by agencies working in the area of children’s health.

The PRC8 serves as referral network to keep interested prevention professionals informed about training, conferences, and prevention events in the Region 8. The PRC8 will coordinate and facilitate the development of training, planning and other prevention activities among service providers and interested people.


The PRC8 also serves as a clearinghouse for Region 8. The PRC8 maintains a book, video and research based curricula lending library, which is a free service to community. In addition to the lending library the PRC8 has printed materials, brochures, pamphlets, handouts, bookmarks, and posters available to groups and individuals within the region. Most of the materials available at the PRC8 are provided free of cost, some may be available at cost replacement based on the quantity needed per group.
